A financial planner, retired architect, real estate broker, dental medicine professor and others will open their Boston homes to the public next week to showcase the livability of Downtown Crossing. The Downtown Crossing Association is hosting its first annual home tour of a neighborhood that’s the focus of a city-orchestrated revitalization effort.
The May 10 self-guided walking tour of 15 homes is designed to change public perception that Downtown Crossing - which more than 6,000 people call home and where another 1,000-plus residential units are under development - is just a business district. The DCA and Boston Redevelopment Authority hope to lure more urban dwellers to the area and convince some owners of Class C office space there to convert their properties to residential units.
One of the growing populations of the Downtown Crossing neighborhood is our resident base, DCA president Rosemarie Sansone said. I thought the tour would be an important way for people to begin to look at the neighborhood in a different way and have an opportunity to experience why these residents have chosen to live (there). This house, located near the intersection of Ave T and Van Sicklen is believed to be Brooklyn ’s smallest house. Occupying what used to be a driveway, it’s a one bedroom, one bathroom home that sits on a parcel of land 7.25 feet (2.2 meters) wide and 113.67 feet (34.6 meters) long and has an interior area of just under 300 square feet.
is actually not in Brooklyn. In fact, it’s located at 128 Day Avenue in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and even has its own Web site.
There appears to be some confusion swirling around the World Wide Web.
This Little House has generated significant buzz on the Internet and in the media because of its unusual sizeĀ it’s essentially built in a narrow driveway (laneway). Ellen DeGeneres even made a phone call during her talk show to inquire about its availability.
The 312-square foot home was recently on the market for a little more than $170,000. Proof that big good things often come in small packages.

If your like me and missed the premier of “The Greening of Southie” last week over in the independant theater in Cambridge…you can now watch it on OnDemand (assuming you have Comcast).
I watched it lastnight and I was totally blow away about what I didnt know about true Green living and how hard it is to obtain a Gold level of L.E.E.D certification. I take my hat off to Pappes Enterprises and especially Tim Papppas, visionary and developer behind the ultra-effecient and super sexy Macallen Building.
Who would have thought one of the most sophisticated and well though out residential buildings would be built in South Boston Well it is. The Macallen Building is nothing short of a work of art standing 11 stories tall over Dorchester Avenue in Southie.
Interested in green living, green architecture or of my new favorite Boston condo developments Check out The Macallen Building and watch the new independent film - The Greening of Southie.
Again - great work and hats off to the Pappas family for developing something that effects us all!!! Interested in buying in this work of art (Prices range from 500k - 2M).

We all toss around the phrase “Traditional Real Estate” like it actually means something. Well what does it mean Many point fingers in calling “Traditionalist” as the common…the ‘whats been going on the past 50 years.’ Well…I havent been around long enough to really put a definition together for what Traditional Real Estate Brokerage was or even is today.
However, I sure can tell you that what is “Traditional” today … will not be “Traditional” tomorrow. The Boston Globe reports today a great article on the Gen-Xer and how ‘we’ are effecting this real estate brokerage and services vertical.
Selfishly I have to agree with this article…after a lot of research and a little bit of risk sticking our neck out into the online real estate brokerage world…we now have a file cabinet full of proof and very happy live clients who preach our services everyday.
The Globe article reports…
Brokers taking on a younger look
An aging industry scrambles to draw Generation X agents who speak the tech-savvy language of today’s home buyers
Instead of following her Generation Xer instincts, Johnson hewed to the practiced routine of seasoned brokers by chauffeuring buyers to and from properties and acting as a liaison for sellers.
It didn’t generate a single sale among today’s younger, more tech-savvy home buyers.
“People, especially my peers, aren’t looking for a ride to the property or a go-between; they want to IM me to find out how big the basement is,” said Johnson, 33, who works for Coldwell Banker in Haverhill. “They often have more information on the properties than most realtors. They don’t want a new friend; they want answers fast and will make decisions quickly when you provide them. I know this because I’m the same way.”
Young brokers such as Johnson are in great need. The real estate industry is getting older - the median age of brokers is 52 - while customers are young - the median age of first-time buyers in Massachusetts is 32. Traditional approaches don’t work on this younger set, who prefer to do most of the legwork themselves and appreciate a more laissez-faire relationship with their brokers. Continued…
