Boston’s South End- an architectural and cultural epicenter

Home to elegant Victorian brick row houses, many dating from the 1800s, and one of the most diverse populations in Boston, The South End blends many of the best elements of Boston. The areas ethnic diversity is reflected in the astounding choice of cuisines in its many fine restaurants, bars, and cafes – Indian, Ethiopian, French, Italian, Venezuelan, Thai, to name a few. The area now includes numerous trendy shops catering to the personal needs of the people (clothing, home furnishings, specialty foods, salons, spas) and their pets (a dog bakery). The South End neighborhood also seamlessly blends the old (in 1973 the South End was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as “the largest urban Victorian neighborhood in the country” and named a Boston Landmark District in 1983), with the new- sleek developments over the bridge on the South Boston/ South End line like the Macallen building, which appeal to buyers with a modern taste. Recently, with home prices rising in the South End, more buyers are crossing over the bridge closer to South Boston to take advantage of lower prices and newer buildings.

Just recently, a Penthouse in one of the South End’s most striking Brownstones was offered up for sale (just went under contract), located at one of Boston’s most desirable addresses- 600 Tremont St. From this much sought after townhouse, you are within walking distance to any of the south ends fantastic restaurants, as well as Newbury St. and the Back Bay. This Penthouse offers three very spacious bedrooms and three bathrooms, with the master bedroom having its own walk in closet and amazing bathroom. The gorgeous living and dining rooms are huge, with Brazilian cherry hardwood throughout. Other amenities include a custom kitchen with stainless steel appliances, Central Air, deeded parking, skyline views from both floors, and a private roof deck with city views.

The Macallen Building was built in 2007- an excellent example of Modern “green” design. The green building features include innovative technologies that will save over 600,000 gallons of water annually while consuming 30% less electricity than a conventional building. The Macallen Building offers over 30 different floor plans, including Lofts, 1, 2 and 3 bedroom units, as well as upper floor triplex units with private outdoor terraces. The units range in price from about $450k to $1.5m. The building houses a luxurious rooftop pool that sits in a landscaped area with green space, barbeques, and lounge chairs. There is also a concierge, onsite gym, underground garage parking, movie screening facility and expansive views through the floor to ceiling windows

One particular example on the market right now is a 4th floor 1 bedroom, priced at $499k. This unit boasts floor to ceiling windows, an open concept kitchen with top of the line appliances, and beautiful hardwood floors throughout. This unit also includes access to all of those amenities listed above, with the addition of a garage parking space.
