BostInnovation.com, a new media property aimed at the creation and aggregation of original content focused on Boston’s startup ecosystem, posted a lovely article on our fine city’s new Innovation District (the waterfront area formerly known as the Seaport District) and the latest event surrounding it, “Boston’s Innovation District: An Evening at the Harpoon Brewery,” which brought together young professionals, entrepreneurs, and city officials (including the Mayor himself) for drinks and discussion last Monday.
The article focused on a central issue that faces the city’s plan to develop and draw business towards …

Recently I’ve posted a few articles about the ongoing dispute between Don Chiofaro, developer of International Place, and Mayor Menino regarding height restrictions on a new office complex that Chiofaro wants to build on The Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway. The problem for Mr. Chiofaro is that there are specific height restrictions in and around the Greenway, an effort to preserve the Boston Harbor skyline, and Menino isn’t budging. But International Place wasn’t the only development slated for the Greenway that probably won’t come to fruition.
During its conception, the Greenway was …

Let’s face it, our brick-and-concrete city hall is an eyesore. It almost looks like a fort or a military base with its sharp lines and gray facade. That’s why Boston’s city hall was chosen as the subject for Boston Society of Architect’s annual Rotch design competition, which the Boston Globe calls a sort of “American Idol’’ for young architects. The six young architects were charged with the task of reimagining city hall, but that’s not all, the contestants were asked to incorporate a specific element into its lower floors, a …

One of the most prestigious award ceremonies for new developments in The Americas, The Urban Land Institute’s Awards for Excellence, has just announced this years finalists, and Boston didn’t make the cut. This competition is one of the most prestigious in the land-use industry, and the eleven finalists were selected from a pool of 170 applicants. Boston, however, will be holding the official award ceremony for the winners of the competition during ULI’s Real Estate Summit at the Spring Council Forum.

Donald J. Chiofaro, developer of International Place, had a plan to redevelop the parking garage in between the Boston Aquarium and the Harbor Towers condo site into a mixed-use property with two buildings, a 560 ft office tower and a 690 ft residential tower. That plan, however, has been squashed by Mayor Menino, The Boston Redevelopment Authority, and the secretary of Energy and Environmental Affairs, Ian Bowles, who remarks, “The proposed project is at such wide variance from the applicable state and local permitting requirements currently in force that it …

If you’ve been to Downtown Crossing in the last year or so then you’ve probably seen the eyesore that used to be Filene’s flagship store, a site eagerly awaiting development by Vornado and John Hynes’ Gale International. The site has been neglected by its owners for some time now, but after Steven Roth, chairman of Vornado, co-developer of the site with Gale International, was caught boasting about how he let a similar urban development site in New York decay until the government was forced to kick in some extra cash, …

Local Boston developers, Weiner Ventures, made a proposition to the BRA (Boston Redevelopment Authority) recently, asking permission to tear down the old Howard Johnson Motel to build a complex including a hotel, residence building, and retail space. The proposed site is extremely close to Fenway Park; in fact, the three bright lights you see in the picture (left) are indeed the very lights that illuminate Boston’s holiest of sports fields.
The letter of intent, filed yesterday, proposed the construction of two interconnected 12 story buildings, one a hotel, the other a …

Hotel developers and The Boston Redevelopment Authority met last Friday to discuss plans to build two new hotels on the former Teradyne Inc. parking lot off Albany St. in Boston’s South End. The backers, Normandy Real Estate and Blue Hawk Investments LLC, plan to build two hotels, one a high-rise luxury hotel, and the other a low-rise extended-stay facility. The hotels have been designed by Boston’s own ADD Inc. and in compliance with city ordinance, the extended-stay facility will be built in an L-shape so that the two hotels can …

In yesterday’s press release, HGTV announced that the new show “Tough As Nails,” starring Cindy Stumpo, will make its premier March 14th at 11pm. The new reality TV series will follow Stumpo, a Boston contractor specializing in luxury homes, as she balances her hectic job, in which she receives over 200 phone calls per day on two cell phones, with her equally stressful family life. Stumpo is a prime example of a woman finding success in a “man’s field,” the contracting business, and her costars include her employee and ex-husband, …
