If anyone has recently driven through Reading’s newly reconstructed downtown, one would be impressed. After years of the residents lamenting its need for a face lift, the state awarded the funds to finally make it attractive and more pedestrian friendly. However, that is only the beginning. Reading knows it has to position itself so that businesses are looking to locate in its community. Reading’s response is the Economic Summit.
The Reading Board of Selectmen has embarked on a new initiative to encourage new businesses to locate in the community. On Tuesday night the Board brought together the Community Planning and Development Commission, Town Department heads, the Economic Development Committee, Making Reading Better (a local advocacy group), and interested residents for a meeting. The purpose was to determine how we currently serve the business community and to begin to look at new and better ways to improve our service.
After a presentation of current initiatives, small groups were formed to look at what Reading does well and where it needs to improve. This is only the beginning and now the real work begins. The Selectmen will be highlighting the project in the coming weeks and will gather the group together to evaluate the progress that is being made in making Reading “The Place to Do Business.”
