Southie’s Saint Patty’s Day Parade is Right Around the Corner!!

If you’re Irish like myself or just love drinking green beer and listening to bagpipes, you look forward to the Saint Patty’s Day Parade in South Boston all year. And what better way to spend St. Patty’s Day in Boston?

According to the Boston Irish Tourism Association, over 24% of Massachusetts residents claim Irish ancestry. Boston honors Ireland’s patron saint in grand style with its annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Sunday, March 14, 2010 at 1 PM.  The Parade starts off from the Broadway MBTA stop in South Boston and proceeds down West Broadway to East Broadway to East 4th, to 5th Street, and around Thomas Park. Marchers continue to Telegraph Street to Dorchester Street ending at Andrew Square.

The parade celebrates Irish heritage with Gaelic pipe and drums corps, high school marching bands, colorful floats, step-dancers, and lots of politicians.  An estimated 600,000 people attend the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Boston each year. You’ll need to arrive early to stake out a viewing spot along the parade route. Since 1901 this parade has become a prominent part of South Boston’s history.

If you have yet to experience the Saint Patty’s Day Parade make this the year. Put your favorite green shirt on and get out to Southie early to enjoy how only Bostonians can celebrate Patty’s Day!!
